PURPOSE
The theme for this issue of the Alumni Magazine, “Many paths to a single mission,” explored the different experiences, career paths, and stages of growth within Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. While each journey is unique, they ultimately connect through a shared purpose: advancing healthcare.
This issue explored how the five schools within Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science are preparing the workforce of the future. Guided by the theme “Many paths to a single mission,” the issue highlighted learners and programs that challenge traditional career trajectories — addressing pressing healthcare needs, embracing purposeful pivots, and reimagining what medical education can be.
DESIGN THINKING
The cross-section of a tree, with all its rings and organic growth patterns, felt like a natural way to represent the many different paths, pivots, and disciplines that make up Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. Each ring marks a different stage of growth, yet together they form one whole — much like the individual journeys that all contribute to a shared mission of moving healthcare forward in new and meaningful ways.

I sourced and art directed UK-based illustrator, Anna Higgie, who drew the tree rings by hand and then scanned the final artwork for digital use. From there, I added the text around the rings in post, weaving it into the illustration to subtly introduce the theme of the issue.

Inspiration I found while concepting.

OUTCOME
The final artwork translated the issue’s central theme into a tactile, hand-drawn visual language. The original artwork was scanned and integrated throughout the issue, adding an organic, human quality to the editorial design. It also is a favorite among both the Group Creative Director and Creative Director at McGuffin!
OUTCOME
This project was a joy to work on and required close attention to detail across every stage, from early concepting through final production. I led the creative direction and developed the visual concepts from initial idea through execution, creating mockups and refinements to help the client visualize the complete experience.
While I owned the creative development and execution of the design system, this project was also deeply collaborative. Working closely with my team across client coordination, production management, and final execution helped bring the full experience to life.
